A Mother's Day Blessing

For those who long to become mothers

A prayer for mothers who yearn 
for children, for those who grieve 
a baby that never became.
For those with a longing 
that threatens to suffocate.

For those who dare to dream 
over and over, only to be met 
with sadness so raw 
that it hurts to breathe, and overcome 
with jealousy that rages 
against swollen bellies.

For those angry at God
and guilty about that anger.

For those who long for a child, 
a prayer for you.

May God help you cling to hope
when you sense it slipping away.

May He give you strength 
when you’re weak with despair,
when every inhale 
and exhale
is too much.

May God provide His steady hand 
when you’re dizzy with overwhelm.

May you be filled with others’ love 
until you feel almost whole.

May you still find presence and joy
in moments of happiness,
and deep belly laughs 
when they’re called for.

May God pour into you 
the warm glow of peace
and a knowing, 
deep inside, 
that you are already a mother.
